BOY SCOUT CAMPS IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE

By Michelle Anselmo, Channel 11 News, St. Louis, MO.

Times are tight for some area boy scouts, and that may mean a popular camp may have to be sold.

Sunnen Camp in Potosi, Missouri and Warren Levis Camp in Godfrey, Illinois have been around for nearly 60 years. Now, there is fear and speculation that one of the two camps may have to be sold. The camps are owned by the Trails West Council based in Wood River, Illinois.

Monday night, the council told members it needs to raise between $1 and $3 million to keep the facilities running, so the council launched a campaign to raise the money. However, some worry this is the first step towards some heartbreaking decisions.

The Trails West Council says it's losing about $51,000 a year, and with the aging infracstructure and much needed repairs, a sale may be the only option.

A camp study committee has been formed and it has not made a recommendation to sell.

The council is getting the two camps appraised, but they have not had any potential buyers.
